Why Hire a Doula?

The Evidence

Having a doula by your side isn’t just comforting—it’s backed by research. Studies show that continuous doula support during labor can lead to safer, more positive birth experiences and better postpartum wellbeing.→ Boehren et al. (2017)'s analysis of 26 studies with over 15,000 laboring people found that doula support significantly improved birth outcomes, including fewer cesarean births, more spontaneous vaginal births, reduced use of pain medication, and greater satisfaction with the birth experience.→ National Partnership for Women & Families 2013 research showed that doula-supported births were 22% less likely to be premature,
had half the rate of birth complications for parent or baby, and were linked to significantly lower rates of postpartum depression and anxiety.
→ Evidence from a 2021 Cochrane systematic review indicated that structured postpartum support can significantly reduce the risk of postpartum depression. Further findings from a 2026 systematic review in JAMA Network Open consistently associated doula support with higher rates of breast feeding initiation and maternal engagement with postpartum healthcare.

About Postpartum Support

Supporting your family through the postpartum period is the heart of my work. Shaped around what you need most, postpartum support visits may include emotional support, help adjusting to life with a newborn, feeding or soothing assistance, and light household help or support with older children. The goal is to ease your transition and give you the care you deserve.Newborn care
Bringing baby home can be as challenging as it is exciting. I’m here to support you through the transition with help in feeding, soothing, diapering, or just keeping an eye on Baby while you get some needed rest. I can also guide you in recognizing when additional support may be helpful and connect you with appropriate resources.
Recovery Assistance
Your body and heart are adjusting to a major life change. I’m honored to support you through both the physical and emotional aspects of postpartum recovery. This may include guidance on comfort measures, gentle exercises and positioning, emotional wellness resources, and some assistance with postpartum surgical recovery.*
Sleep Guidance
I can help you understand and establish healthy sleep habits for both Baby and you, offering gentle guidance suited to your family’s needs.
Parent & Family Support
As your postpartum doula, I’m happy to lend a hand with light household tasks—meal prep service, simple chores, errands, or caring for older children—so you can focus on rest, healing, and bonding.

*A postpartum doula can support aspects of postpartum surgical recovery—including perineal or cesarean recovery, and breast tenderness—only through non-medical tasks and general comfort measures. Any care requiring medical assessment or clinical guidance must be provided by a medical professional. In those cases, the doula can help you navigate appropriate options and resources.

About Active Labor & Birth Support

When labor begins, my focus is on providing calm, consistent support every step of the way. Whether you need reassurance over the phone, hands-on comfort measures, or simply a steady presence in the room, I'll be there to help you navigate your birth with confidence.I encourage you to call me as soon as your water breaks, and I typically join you during the 4-1-1 stage of labor (when contractions are about four minutes apart, lasting 1–2 minutes each, for at least one hour), or when you let me know that you are ready for my arrival. You are welcome to reach out sooner if you feel you need support. On arrival, I stay with you continuously. I don’t rotate out or “switch shifts” with another doula. I remain with you through labor and birth, and I leave only once your baby has arrived and you feel comfortable settling in without me until our postpartum visit. In the event of an unforeseen emergency, a backup doula will be sent in my place to support your active labor. You will have the opportunity to meet my backup before your due date, if you would like to do so.

About Prenatal Visits

A prenatal visit, taking place before your birth, is a chance for an open conversation between me, you, and anyone you consider part of your support team. We can talk through any questions, worries, or hopes you have for pregnancy, birth, or postpartum. I’ll also share helpful resources and options that fit your needs. We’ll also go over your birth plan—whether you already have one or want to create one together. This may include your planned birth location, preferences around induction or medical interventions, and how you’d like me to support and advocate for you. We’ll also talk about what you’d like from your postpartum visits and (when possible) get those scheduled ahead of time so you have less to coordinate later.Prenatal visits are typically in person and last about 1 - 2 hours. Birth Package One includes one prenatal visit which should take place at around 34 - 36 weeks along. Birth Package Two includes two prenatal visits, the first taking place at around 32 - 34 weeks along, and the second taking place at around 34 - 36 weeks along.

About Sibling Support

Children in the household need some extra support as well while in the process of welcoming a new little family member. This can be especially difficult on parents who might not have close family, friends, or trusted, on-call childcare near by.As your family's Sibling Doula, I provide attentive childcare and emotional support for your older children while you welcome your newest little one. Support begins with a two-hour prenatal Meet & Greet, giving your children the opportunity to become comfortable with me before labor begins. Parents are welcome to participate or use this time to rest, prepare, or enjoy some one-on-one time together.Beginning at 37 weeks of pregnancy, I remain on call for your birth and will care for your children for up to 24 hours during labor and the birth of your baby. Care may take place in your home and, when appropriate and permitted by facility policies, at your chosen birth center or hospital. My goal is to help maintain your children's routines, provide comfort and reassurance, and ensure they feel supported throughout this special transition.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Note About Medical Care:
Doulas are non-medical professionals. We do not diagnose conditions, perform clinical exams, or provide medical advice. We can guide you toward appropriate medical care, help you find the right providers, and support you in advocating for your needs.
As doula who is not a medical professional, I cannot deliver or "catch" the baby. I require a midwife, nurse, or doctor to be present during delivery. What does it mean to be uncertified?I have completed Doula Trainings International (DTI)’s Full Spectrum Doula Training Program and am currently working toward both DTI certification and Virginia's doula certification program. Not all professional doulas are certified by a certain entity; this is a personal professional goal. In order to complete my certifications, I am required to provide a certain number of hours of doula care, whether through labor support, postpartum support, or other reproductive health services. While I offer my services at a reduced rate compared to other doulas in the DMV area, my commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care remains the same. Will a doula replace my partner?A doula does not replace your partner or primary support person. Instead, we enhance the entire team—offering guidance, reassurance, and evidence-based support to help both parents feel confident. Research shows that doula presence often increases partner involvement by supporting communication and creating a calm, organized environment (Sources 1, 2 & 3).If I hire a doula for my home-birth, do I still need a doctor or midwife present? While it is legal in the United States to give birth at home without medical assistance (sometimes referred to as “free birth” or "unassisted birth"), a doula is not a substitute for a licensed medical provider such as an OB-GYN or certified midwife. For both client safety and professional liability reasons, I am only able to provide birth support for births that include care from a trained medical professional.Do you have a backup doula? Under what circumstances would a backup attend instead of you? Will clients meet the backup in advance? In the unlikely event that an emergency prevents me from attending your birth, I do maintain relationships with a small roster of trusted local backup doulas whom I may contact to provide support in my absence. Because I intentionally limit the number of labor support clients I accept each month, scheduling conflicts are rare. Situations that could require backup coverage may include illness, family emergency, or other unforeseen circumstances. While meeting backup doulas in advance is typically not necessary, I am happy to share additional information about my backup network upon request.

Postpartum Meal Prep Service

As your Postpartum Doula, it would be my pleasure to help cook and prep meals for you and your family in your home during a postpartum visit. How Does Your Meal Service Work?During your scheduled postpartum visit, I can prepare nourishing meals for you and/or your family in your own kitchen. Ingredients and supplies can either be purchased by you ahead of time or ordered through a grocery pickup service and picked up by me on my way to your home. I will leave reheating instructions for any selected frozen meals. Groceries should be selected depending on the number of servings desired for each requested meal, and while keeping any allergens in mind.If meal preparation is part of the support you'd like during your visit, please be sure to schedule enough time to accommodate it. The amount of time needed will depend on the recipes and quantity of food you'd like prepared, but I generally recommend allowing at least two hours for meal preparation. We can discuss your goals and arrange the appropriate visit length in advance to ensure there's plenty of time to provide the support you need.
